Baby Preparation & Essentials

This is only a rough guide, not a requirement: every family needs different things.
Many items are available in good condition second-hand, so buy only a little at first.

Find a midwife (as early as possible)
Register with a maternity hospital or birth centre
Book an antenatal class

Apply for maternity allowance through the health insurer
Notify the employer of parental leave (observe deadlines)
Arrange acknowledgement of paternity if unmarried

Bedside cot or baby cot, 2 fitted sheets, newborn-size sleeping bags

6 bodysuits, 6 sleepsuits, 2 hats, socks, cardigans
Adjust according to the season

Changing mat, nappies, wet wipes or flannels, barrier cream

Infant car seat, pram or baby carrier

Identity document, maternity record, insurance card
Comfortable clothing, toiletries, charging cable

First outfit, hat, blanket, infant car seat for the journey home

Obtain the birth certificate from the registry office
Register the child with the health insurer
Apply for child benefit
Apply for parental allowance (can be backdated by up to 3 months)

Arrange the U2 newborn examination (between the 3rd and 10th day of life) at the hospital or with the paediatrician

Cook and freeze meals in advance; visitors may help instead of only watching

A baby bouncer, heat lamp, and specialist equipment can be bought later if they are genuinely needed
